The President of the Jordanian Publishers Association and Director of the Amman International Book Fair, Jabr Abu Fares, praised the efforts of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development in supporting the educational process and promoting the role of reading.
In a press statement issued following his meeting on Saturday with Minister of Education and Human Resources Development Dr. Azmi Mahafzah, Abu Fares said Jordan’s publishing sector is facing challenges that threaten the book industry and the rights of authors and publishers, foremost among them digital and print piracy and the illegal distribution of scientific and literary works.
During the meeting, which was attended by the Chairman of the Cultural Committee of the Amman International Book Fair, Jaafar Al-Aqili, Abu Fares said that reactivating school libraries, reinstating dedicated reading periods, and allocating annual budgets for schools to purchase Jordanian publications would help support Jordanian publishers and authors and encourage the local book industry.
Abu Fares also stressed the need to combat digital and print piracy and strengthen measures to reduce the risks of unauthorized copying and reproduction of books. He emphasized the importance of respecting authors’ and publishers’ rights through coordination with relevant authorities, as well as preventing the illegal distribution of copyrighted works through online platforms, websites, and social media.
The President of the Jordanian Publishers Association also called on Jordanian universities to refrain from the unauthorized electronic distribution of university textbooks in PDF format among students, in order to protect the rights of authors and publishers and support the continued development of the scientific and academic publishing industry.
In his statement, Abu Fares called for joint cooperation between the Jordanian Publishers Association and the Ministry to coordinate a set of measures aimed at protecting intellectual property and supporting Jordan’s publishing sector.
